How to invoice once they place an order?

Ok....here is my issue. I have a website and customers can order and pay. HOWEVER, I don't always know what size shipping box I am using with each order. How do I accept their order AND then send an invoice for the shipping? I do not want to put Free Shipping on the order form because obviously it will not be. PLEASE help. I have no been able to get anywhere with Square Support.

I am a very small one person licensed home bakery and want to expand into shipping some of the baked goods that I know will ship well. I have a base of customers that want this service from me.

Is it your thought to have the customer pay twice ? Once online for the order and again to pay the shipping via an invoice. Seems that may be a bit awkward for bookkeeping. (just thinking out loud of course ...) I guess we need to know a bit more about how you are using your website for online orders - for example, can someone place an order and pick it up or is your site just setup for accepting an order and you ship (as most sites do). This may help others here who may be able to help.

We understand your concern. To solve this issue, you can set up your website to accept orders without specifying shipping costs. However, if you are using Square Online and have not Set Up Shipping Areas and Rates with Square Online feel free to take a look at how you can get that done on the article attached.

If you are still looking to send an invoice after receiving an order, you could calculate the shipping cost based on the box size and customer location. Most carriers such as FedEX here can help you calculate the cost of shipping and packaging. Then, you can send a separate invoice to the customer via email for the shipping charges using Square Invoices. Make sure to clearly outline the shipping costs and payment instructions in the invoice.
