Hello there @TheCustomCo! Welcome to the Seller Community 👋

I was able to confirm with our team that if you purchase a custom domain with Square, the existing square.site sub-domain will automatically forward to the new domain. If this wasn't your experience, please let me know.

Square Domain Forwarding

I had started my business using a free square domain (the-custom-company.square.site) with the anticipation of being able to upgrade to a custom domain in the future (ex: thecustomcompany.com), but if I do that now I lose all my advertising I have worked on (social media posts, business cards, flyers, QR codes, etc) and would be left with leading my customers to a broken link, due to there not being an option for domain/url forwarding from a free square domain to a new bought custom domain. PLEASE ADD!! I would gladly pay for a custom domain, if I were guaranteed that I could forward people from the-custom-company.square.site to my new site.
